As a pet parent, youâll face many challenges with your pet. Health issues that require surgery are some of the hardest to accept. From routine surgeries to emergency surgical treatments, you can count on our team to provide knowledgeable and compassionate care.
What to Expect from Pet Surgery
Pet surgery can be a source of tremendous stress and anxiety for a pet owner as you donât know what to expect. You may have concerns about your pet feeling pain during the procedure, reacting negatively to the anesthesia or having difficulty recovering once the surgery is done.
At Magruder Tabb Animal Clinic, our Yorktown veterinarian will take time to go over your petâs surgery in full so youâll know what to expect. Whether your pet is having routine surgery or undergoing emergency treatment to repair a broken bone or correct a medical condition, weâll explain why surgery is needed and how it will benefit your pet. This explanation will give you confidence that youâre making the right decision in your petâs care. Weâll also answer any questions you may have concerning your petâs procedure, prognosis for recovery and post-op care.
Surgery Prep
Before your petâs surgery, our veterinarian will perform a pre-anesthetic exam which includes blood work to ensure your pet has no medical issues that can interfere with the use of anesthesia. Weâll then place an IV catheter in your petâs front or back leg to provide medications and fluids during the procedure. Your pet will be given pain medications before his surgery to keep him comfortable throughout the procedure. Weâll also prescribe pain medications for his post-op care to help with his recovery.
