Arthritis In Pets

We all know someone either in our family or our close group of friends that suffers from arthritis. What you may not realize is that your beloved pet can suffer from this debilitating disease as well. Arthritis in pets is a common condition that can cause a great deal of pain and suffering for your furry friend. However, at Magruder Tabb Animal Clinic in Yorktown, we can make sure your pet gets the diagnosis and proper treatment necessary to live a normal life.

Arthritis In Pets

Symptoms of Arthritis in Pets

Pets have an instinctual nature to hide pain because in the wild a sick or injured animal is easy prey for predators. This means that sometimes it can be difficult to tell if your pet is suffering from arthritis. However, there are some common signs and symptoms to look for that may indicate your pet has arthritis:

  • Limping or difficulty walking
  • Joint swelling
  • Reluctance to move or exercise
  • Stiffness or lameness after periods of inactivity
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Sensitivity to touch or being handled

Causes of Arthritis

There are several contributors to arthritis in your cat or dog, but the primary reason is age. Like humans, as pets get older, they are more likely to develop arthritis. However, other conditions can put your pet at a higher risk for developing arthritis, such as diabetes, infections, and injuries.

Diagnosing and Treating Arthritis

Pets aren't going to tell you something is wrong. Testing for arthritis means our veterinarian will go through a complete physical examination of your animal, including a full assessment of the joints. We will also ask you about your pet's diet, level of activity, and any changes in behavior you've noticed. In some cases, we may also order x-rays or other imaging tests to get a better look at the joints. We're also looking for signs of inflammation.

Once we have a diagnosis, we can develop a treatment plan that is best for your pet. This may include weight management, exercise, physical therapy, and medication. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary.

Arthritis may not be able to be prevented, but you can do your part by ensuring your pet has regular exams with a vet. If the arthritis is caught early, it's much easier to manage to help pets avoid pain and discomfort.
