Pet Allergies FAQs

Just like human beings, pets are vulnerable to various types of allergies. Some pets have challenges with specific foods. Other pets have seasonal allergies, making them congested and vulnerable to runny or cloudy eyes. Detecting a pet's allergies can sometimes be a difficult task, as the symptoms may be hard to notice. At Magruder Tabb Animal Clinic in Yorktown, VA, our veterinary team diagnoses and treats pet allergies. It is important to seek treatment for your pet, as allergies can be frustrating and painful. Here are some commonly asked questions about pet allergies.

What is an allergy?

An allergy is a misguided immune system response to a foreign substance. It's not always clear why some pets have allergies, but they are mostly induced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

What are the common symptoms of allergies in a pet?

Pet allergy symptoms can vary based on severity, type, and environment. They include:

  • Frequent biting, licking, scratching, and chewing
  • Hair loss
  • Dull coat or foul-smelling fur
  • Red, inflamed, or irritated areas between the toes or paws
  • Waxy discharge from the ears
  • Redness in the ears
  • Vomiting
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy, runny nose
  • Diarrhea
  • Gastrointestinal signs

Symptoms of allergies in your pet can manifest themselves as other prevailing health conditions, too. The only way to establish what is causing allergies in your pet is to seek the services of our vet if you spot unusual signs.

What are the various types of allergies in pets?

There are several types of pet allergies. One is food allergies. Your pet may be allergic to a specific nutrient or ingredient. These allergies are characterized by chronic anal gland inflammation, itching, chronic ear infections, and sporadic vomiting.

Environmental allergies are more common. They are activated by anything your pet encounters in the environment, including mold, pollen, grass, and dust. Pets can also have seasonal allergies.

Another pet allergy is flea allergies. Some animals are allergic to flea saliva. When a flea bites, your animal may constantly scratch at the area, causing red and sore skin.

How are allergies diagnosed and treated?

Our veterinarian will first need to find the cause of your pet’s allergy. In some instances, we may require samples of urine or blood. We will also inquire about your pet's lifestyle and food. Once the cause of the pet allergy has been established, we can start a treatment plan. This treatment may include:

  • Medicated shampoos and ointments
  • Oral medications
  • Dietary counseling
  • Nutritional supplements
