Microchipping

Pet Microchipping from Your Vet in Yorktown, VA

No owner expects a pet to escape or get stolen.  Since these sad events do occur, the safest and most effective action owners can take to protect their animals is microchipping.  Our vet can perform this procedure in just a few minutes at our Magruder Tabb Animal Clinic in Yorktown.

Microchipping Benefits

Each year, as many as 8 million animals enter shelters.  Only about 20 percent of dogs reunite with their owners.  For cats, the figure is 2 percent.  Fortunately, owners can boost the chances of a pet’s return by arranging for pet microchipping from our vet.

Beyond offering safety, microchips are convenient for owners.  Maintenance is minimal once our doctor implants a chip.  The only step an owner needs to take is providing the manufacturer with contact information for its chip registry and making sure that the information is always up to date.

Each microchip should outlast a pet’s lifetime.  Our veterinary staff scans an animal with one at each yearly exam to make sure the chip is in the correct position and is functioning properly.

A microchip is a safer way to provide owner information than a detachable collar is.  Our doctor suggests that the best combination to protect a cat or a dog is a breakaway collar with ID tags plus microchipping.

What to Expect

Microchipping is harmless to a pet.  Actual insertion takes only a few seconds.  Our Yorktown vet can perform the procedure at an appointment specifically for that purpose or during a different visit.

A microchip is an electronic device that resides within a glass cylinder.  It is roughly the size of a grain of rice.

Using a hypodermic needle, our doctor implants the chip underneath the animal’s skin, typically between its shoulder blades.  Discomfort is minimal, normally no more than pets experience after an injection.

Each chip has a special number assigned by the manufacturer.  When an unidentified pet appears at an animal shelter, veterinary practice, or police station, the staff scans it with a special wand.  If the animal has been microchipped, its unique registration number appears.  This makes it possible to retrieve owner's contact information and help the animal return home.
